Melawati Hill

Bukit Melawati is the focal landmark of Kuala Selangor, being the only hill in this coastal town. In its early days, the hill was used as a stronghold by the Selangor Sultans to guard and protect the tin mining trade. A large fort was built around the peak of which only some of the stone walls remain today, to the benefit of visitors. Some of the original canons used in the ancient wars, along with replicas, have been placed around the hill. Much of the grounds have been turned into a recreational park, with benches and foot paths. A narrow road leads from the base of Bukit Melawati near the clock tower in the center of town all the way up to the peak, before circling back down. This road is open for vehicles on weekdays but remainds closed during weekends. Instead, a colourful tram which can carry dozens of passengers rides up the road and drops off visitors at selected points.

On the slopes of Bukit Melawati, one can find various attractions, including a poisoned well, Chinese cemetery, traditional arts museum and a historical museum. The Altingsburg lighthouse was built in 1907 on the peak and still functions today, guiding ships along Kuala Selangor's coast with its spotlights. Probably the most popular attraction in Melawati Hill is not a structure or building, but rather the silver leaf monkeys that have made the hill their day time abode. These primates are a gentle species of monkeys that inhabit coastal forests and mangroves. Their behaviour is much unlike the common (and aggressive) long tailed macaque, as they will patiently queue up for food from your hand, accept being stroked and played with as well as perch on your shoulder nonchalantly.
